PAPER@HOME

To make paper at home you will need:

  • a blender

  • a large tub or bin

  • a deckle (building deckle blog coming soon)

  • Paper you would like to recycle

  • an old bedsheet

  • a flat surface in an area that can get wet

Step 1

  • Collect paper from your home, work, and recycling

  • soak it briefly in water

Step 2

  • plug in your blender

  • tear off pieces of paper and add to blender with some water

  • blend until you like it, or until it reminds you of oatmeal

  • dump contents into a large tub or bin

  • repeat until you feel like you have enough pulp

Step 3

  • You may want to add water or pulp to your tub at any time

  • Stir the tub

  • Swoop your deckle to the bottom of the tub and pull up so the water falls through the screen and the pulp settles evenly on top

  • The screenless part of the frame goes on top

  • remove the top of the deckle and flip the paper side down onto a sheet

  • Remove the deckle, and your paper should stay on the sheet. This part can take some finesse. If you mess up, do not try to remove the paper pulp; just try again on the next one. You'll end up with imperfect or even bad ones. No biggie!

Step 4

  • You might slide the sheet over to dry ground, or set up a fan

  • The paper will dry pretty quickly

  • When it’s dry, you can peel off the sheets starting at the corners

  • It might take some gentleness not to rip the paper

  • Form a pile

Congrats! Now you have paper you made all on your own.
